   Instead of talking solely about definitions, I think it would be more   
   productive if we could go into the real world ramifications of one companies   
   ownership of another.  (And by "productive", I strictly mean me trying to   
   learn something more from this discussion by stirring the kettle a little.

   RDS owns Shell, PepsiCo owns KFC.  I know that they are two potentially   
   different situations, maybe one is not comparable to the other, but I wanted   
   to get a broader idea of the implications of subsidiary ownership.  What all   
   it all mean, in practice as well as in theory?  What is it that matters or   
   doesn't matter about it?
