"whole new level" hit a note with me ("hit a note", hate that one,
   too).

I just finished a "management" seminar on how to give reviews and one
section was on "mental appraisal" as a first step. "Avoid using
thought patterns such as 'he set the bar low and still can't reach it'
or 'he lowered expections to a whole new level'"

So "takes the series to a whole new level" can have more than one
   meaning.
