Some people are confusing the two voyages. The first one that
colonised Earth as the 13th Colony and the Rag Tag Fleet looking for
Earth thousands of years later. And there is a slightly different
interpretation between the New BSG and the old one:

In the old one Earth was found and founded by the 13th colonist.
Somehow we lost all that technology but were the inspiration for all
of the ancients including the Egyptians and the Greeks who's history
   leads right up to us.

Then the Rag Tag fleet went looking for Earth. Whether you accept
"Galactica 1980" as canon or not (I do as awful as it was) they
found/would have found Earth after the Moon Landing in July 1969 as
shown in the last episode of the original "Battlestar Galactica"; so
they would had found us in modern times anyway you look at it by
tracing the signal back (which is why I accept "Galactica 1980" as
the legit successor to the original BSG. That shot of the Apollo 11
lift off toward the end of the original BSG foreshadowed it).

In the new "Battlestar Galactica" the 13th colonist found Original
Earth, but they were what would be later called Cylons who broke
away form the other 12 Colonies who learned how to reproduce
naturally and let resurrection technology lapse. They end up making
the same mistakes the humans on Kobol did destroying Earth in a Human
Cylon Vs mechanical Cylon War except for a few escapes who would be
called the Final Five. They discovered the 12 Colonies and won a stay
of execution of mankind temporarily to keep the Colonial Cylons from
   destroying them.

Then the Colonial Cylons destroyed almost totally. The Colonial
humans who fled trying to find Earth. They did, Original Earth which
was destroyed by the Cylon humans the Final Five belonged to and came
from. Then they moved on and eventually found Earth 2, our Earth.
They renounced technology and mated with the identical human natives
of Earth 2 and we essentially started all over again influencing
greatly over a course of 150,000 years our cultures like the Greeks.
That led all the way up to us now through the trace elements of Cylon
DNA carrying the Colonial Memories through out the generations,
thinking they were our own original ideas in some cases, right up to
Bob Dyan thinking he was the one who came up with "All Along the
   Watch Tower" LOL!

Simply put in the original BSG The Rag Tag Fleet found us/would've
found us in modern times as the descendants of the 13th tribe. In the
New BSG The Rag Tag Fleet were our beginnings, The 13th tribe went
somewhere else and we are the descendants of the Rag Tag Fleet.
