Synchronet (Which is what I       run) has made great strides in blending the old (bbs) with the new (www).. It       however is still the Sysop that makes or breaks there bbs.. If he is an Arse It       still doesnt attract users.. I still try to be old school in some ways.       (Answering a chat page if I am in fact around for example)..
