After all you wore some sort of a costume       all your childhood life, and looked forward to it.                     >       > At any rate, the churches are geared up for it in most all       > denominations. Their activities vary and some let you even come in       > costume.              You do not know that for a fact. In fact if you dared to look at a       church, if they mentioned the day at all they provided alternative fun       for all who attend Like a harvest festival.              **************************       What's the history of modern Halloween traditions?              Now that you're more familiar with the history of Halloween, you might       be wondering where trick-or-treating and candy corn came into play—two       modern aspects of the holiday.              There are a few theories that explain why we've come to raid our       neighbors' homes for candy on October 31. One idea is that the custom       originated from the Irish tradition of guising, which is when young       Irish people would dress in costume before singing songs, telling jokes,       or performing any other sort of “trick” before collecting a "treat" of       fruit, nuts, or coins. Another possible origin story traces back to       15th-century Christianity. At that time, Christians would partake in the       act of souling, which meant they'd go from door to door and ask for       "treats," otherwise known as "soul cakes." They would take these       pastries in exchange for a promise to pray for the souls of the       homeowner’s dead relatives.              As for candy corn, the tri-colored sweet is a well-known symbol of       Halloween today, but it hasn't always been that way. The birth of candy       corn can be traced back to Philadelphia in the 1880s, which is when a       candy-maker at the Wunderle Candy Company allegedly invented it. In       1898, the Goelitz Company began to mass-produce candy corn, dubbing it       "Chicken Feed," which led to an increase in its popularity. The craze       reached its peak in the 1950s, and candy corn's identity as a Halloween       staple became solidified in the U.S.       ********************************       The Puritans who came to America were opposed to those who made it a       pagan type celebration.              >       > Yes, millions of people celebrate Satan's holiday. Do you?       >              Many JW's let their kids celebrate it, and or feed the kids treats lest       their homes be egged.              > Sincerely James              What day of the week do Jehovah Witnesses go to church?              The weekend meeting, usually held on Sunday, comprises a 30-minute       public talk by a congregation elder or ministerial servant and a       one-hour question-and-answer study of a Bible-based article from The       Watchtower magazine, with questions prepared by the Watch Tower Society       and the answers provided in the magazine.              That is called indoctrination. Not a question and answer by the people,       but a following of a script to brainwash people and teach them to parrot       answers given by the magazine, not the Word of God.              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
