   Jesus and Beelzebub   
   Mt 12:22-30; Mk 3:20-27   
      
   14 He was casting out a demon, and it was mute. When the demon had gone out,   
   the mute man spoke, and the crowd marveled.   
   15 (Mt 9:34) But some of them said, "He casts out demons through Beelzebub,   
   the ruler of the demons."   
   16 Others, testing Him, asked Him for a sign from heaven.   
   17 (Mt 9:4) But He, knowing their thoughts, said to them,   
   "Every kingdom divided against itself is made desolate.   
   And a house divided against itself falls.   
   18 If Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand?   
   For you say that I cast out demons through Beelzebub.   
   19 Now if I cast out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your sons cast them out?   
   Therefore they will be your judges.   
   20 (Ex 8:19) But if I cast out demons with the finger of God,   
   no doubt the kingdom of God has come upon you.   
   21 "When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own palace,   
   his goods are peacefully kept.   
   22 (Isa 49:24-25; 53:12) But when a stronger man than he attacks   
   and overpowers him, he seizes all the armor in which the man trusted   
   and divides his spoils.   
   23 (Mt 12:30; Lk 9:50) "He who is not with Me is against Me,   
   and he who does not gather with Me scatters.

   The Return of the Unclean Spirit   
   Mt 12:43-45   
      
   24 (Mt 12:43-45; Ps 63:1) "When an unclean spirit goes out of a man,   
   it goes through dry places seeking rest. Finding none, it says,   
   'I will return to my house, from which I came.'   
   25 When it comes, it finds it swept and furnished.   
   26 (Jn 5:14; 2Pe 2:20-22) Then it goes and brings seven other spirits   
   more wicked than itself, and they enter and dwell there.   
   And the last state of that man is worse than the first."   
      
   [24] When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry   
   places, seeking rest; and finding none, he saith, I will return unto my   
   house whence I came out.   
   [25] And when he cometh, he findeth it swept and garnished.   
   [26] Then goeth he, and taketh to him seven other spirits more wicked than   
   himself; and they enter in, and dwell there: and the last state of that man   
   is worse than the first.   
      
   True Blessedness   
      
   27 (Lk 1:48) As He spoke these things, a woman from the crowd raised   
   her voice and said to Him,   
   "Blessed is the woman who gave You birth and nursed You."   
   28 (Lk 8:21) But He said, "Indeed, blessed are those who hear the word of God   
   and keep it."   
      
   [27] And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the   
   company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that   
   bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked.   
   [28] But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God,   
   and keep it.   
      
   The Demand for a Sign   
   Mt 12:38-42; Mk 8:12   
      
   29 (Mk 8:11-12; Lk 11:16) When the crowds pressed upon Him, He began to say,   
   "This is an evil generation. It looks for a sign, but no sign will be given it   
   except the sign of Jonah the prophet.   
   30 (Jnh 1:17) For as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites,   
   so will the Son of Man be to this generation.   
   31 (2Ch 9:1; Jer 3:11) The Queen of the South will rise up in the judgment   
   with the men of this generation and condemn them,   
   for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon.   
   And now one greater than Solomon is here.   
   32 The men of Nineveh will rise up in the judgment with this generation   
   and will condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah.   
   And now one greater than Jonah is here.   
      
   [29] And when the people were gathered thick together, he began to say, This

   and shall condemn it: for they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and,   
   behold, a greater than Jonas is here.   
      
   The Light of the Body   
   Mt 5:15; 6:22-23   
      
   33 "No one, when he has lit a candle, puts it in a secret place   
   or under a basket, but on a candlestick,   
   that those who come in may see the light.   
   34 (Mt 6:22-23) The eye is the lamp of the body. Therefore when your eye   
   is good, your whole body also is full of light.   
   But when your eye is bad, your body also is full of darkness.   
   35 Take heed therefore lest the light which is in you is darkness.   
   36 If your whole body, then, is full of light, no part being dark,   
   the whole body will be full of light,   
   as when the shining candle gives you light."   
      
   [33] No man, when he hath lighted a candle, putteth it in a secret place,   
   neither under a bushel, but on a candlestick, that they which come in may   
   see the light.   
   [34] The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single,   
   thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, thy body   
   also is full of darkness.   
   [35] Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness.   
   [36] If thy whole body therefore be full of light, having no part dark, the   
   whole shall be full of light, as when the bright shining of a candle doth   
   give thee light.   
      
   The Denouncing of the Pharisees and Lawyers

   37 (Lk 7:36; 14:1) As He spoke, a Pharisee asked Him to dine with him.   
   So He went in and sat down to eat.
