Jesus did not use “weeping and gnashing of teeth” to describe a brief,
symbolic moment. He used it to describe the ongoing condition of those
placed “in that place” after judgment. The phrase always appears in
contexts of conscious, continuous experience, never a single reaction
   before vanishing.

In Matthew 13:42 He said the angels “will throw them into the fiery
furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth”
   (Matthew 13:42, ESV).
He repeated the same warning in multiple passages:

Matthew 8:12 – “the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer
darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth”
Matthew 22:13 – “Bind him hand and foot and cast him into the outer
darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth”
Matthew 24:51 – “and will cut him in pieces and put him with the
hypocrites. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth”
Matthew 25:30 – “Cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness. In
that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth”

   Note two critical details:

   1. Jesus consistently describes “that place” as a *condition*, not a
   moment.
It is the ongoing state of those under judgment.

   2. “Weeping and gnashing of teeth” always describes a response that
   continues.
Repeated use across His parables and teachings shows a fixed
condition, not a single cry before disappearing.

This language fits everything else Jesus taught:

   • In *Gehenna* the worm “does not die” and the fire “is not quenched”
   (Mark 9:48, ESV; *hell* [Gehenna]).
Undying worms and unquenchable fire point to ongoing consequences.

   • Judgment has degrees—“more tolerable” for some than others (Matthew
   11:22–24).

   Degrees cannot apply to extinction.

   • Judas faces a fate worse than never existing (Matthew 26:24).
Non-existence cannot be worse than non-existence.

   Revelation gives the same picture:

“The smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever, and they have no
rest, day or night” (Revelation 14:11, ESV).
Restlessness “day or night” cannot describe symbolic misery in the
   moment before vanishing.

The lake of fire receives the devil, the beast, and the false
prophet—and “they will be tormented day and night forever and ever”
   (Revelation 20:10, ESV).

The same lake receives all not in the book of life (Revelation 20:15, ESV).

Scripture never assigns two different outcomes in the same place.

Jesus’ imagery of weeping and gnashing of teeth is one more confirmation
that judgment is conscious and continuous—not symbolic and not annihilation.

   --
Have you heard the good news Christ died for our sins (†), and God
   raised Him from the dead?

That Christ died for our sins shows we're sinners who deserve the death
penalty. That God raised Him from the dead shows Christ's death
satisfied God's righteous demands against our sin (Romans 3:25; 1 John
2:1-2). This means God can now remain just, while forgiving you of your
sins, and saving you from eternal damnation.

On the basis of Christ's death and resurrection for our sins, call on
the name of the Lord to save you: "For 'everyone who calls on the name
of the Lord will be saved'" (Romans 10:13, ESV).
