Genesis 2:7 does not teach that man *is only* a soul or that the soul
   ceases at death.
It teaches that God formed man’s body from the ground and gave life by
   His breath.
The phrase “living soul” (Hebrew *nephesh ḥayyah*) describes a living
person, not the nature of the inner self.

The Old Testament uses *nephesh* in flexible ways: person, life,
   appetite, emotion.
That does not mean the soul ends when the body dies. Scripture reveals
the opposite when it speaks clearly about existence after death.

Look at the texts where God gives direct revelation about the state of
   man after death:

Jesus said, “Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the
soul” (Matthew 10:28, KJV; *hell* [Gehenna]).
Killing the body does not touch the soul. That proves the soul continues
   when the body dies.

Paul said, “to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord”
   (2 Corinthians 5:8).
He described a real departure and a real conscious presence with Christ.

Jesus told the repentant man on the cross, “Today you will be with me in
   paradise” (Luke 23:43).
That places a believing man with Christ the same day he died.
Not unconscious. Not extinguished. With Christ.

Revelation shows “the souls of those who had been slain” crying out to
   God (Revelation 6:9–10).
   They are conscious, speaking, waiting.
   Not sleeping. Not extinguished.

   You mentioned Lazarus.
When Jesus said, “Lazarus sleeps,” the disciples took Him literally, and
Jesus clarified: “Lazarus is dead” (John 11:11–14).
“Sleep” is a metaphor for bodily death, not soul-extinction.
When Jesus raised him, He did not say the man had no conscious
existence. He simply restored his body.

   You also cited Rachel.
Genesis 35:18 says her *nephesh* was departing when she died.
That supports the truth that the inner life continues and leaves the body.
Translators who render *nephesh* as “life” capture the functional sense,
but the narrative still shows something departing from the body at death.

The Old Testament examples you listed (a soul eating meat, having blood,
dying) show that *nephesh* often refers to a whole person.
That is true. But the New Testament reveals more: man has an inner life
that survives the body’s death, and that inner life enters conscious
   blessing or conscious judgment.

Jesus warned about *Gehenna*, “where their worm does not die and the
fire is not quenched” (Mark 9:48, ESV; *hell* [Gehenna]).
Worms that do not die and fire that is not quenched have no purpose if
   the person ceases to exist.

Jesus taught degrees of judgment—“more tolerable” for some than others
   (Matthew 11:22–24).
   Degrees require conscious experience.

Jesus said of Judas, “It would have been better for that man if he had
   not been born” (Matthew 26:24).
   “Not born” equals non-existence.
Something worse than non-existence cannot be extinction.

Paul said unbelievers “will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction
away from the presence of the Lord” (2 Thessalonians 1:9, ESV).
You cannot be “away from” someone if you no longer exist.

Revelation says the lost “have no rest, day or night” (Revelation 14:11,
   ESV).
No rest “day or night” cannot describe an extinguished person.

The flexible use of *nephesh* does not overturn the clear revelation God
   gives in the New Testament.
The soul continues after death, either with Christ in blessing or
   separated from Him in judgment.

   --
Have you heard the good news Christ died for our sins (†), and God
   raised Him from the dead?

That Christ died for our sins shows we're sinners who deserve the death
penalty. That God raised Him from the dead shows Christ's death
satisfied God's righteous demands against our sin (Romans 3:25; 1 John
2:1-2). This means God can now remain just, while forgiving you of your
sins, and saving you from eternal damnation.

On the basis of Christ's death and resurrection for our sins, call on
the name of the Lord to save you: "For 'everyone who calls on the name
of the Lord will be saved'" (Romans 10:13, ESV).
