Hypocrisy has been around since the beginning of time and let he or she who
is without sin throw the first stone.

The behaviour outlined by Robbie is worthy of comment and I think Robbie did
the right thing in asking that difficult question about wages in Chinese
sweat shops. Although of course 40 quid a month is better than 0 quid a
month and precise comparisons are rather difficult to make because 40 quid
goes much further in China than it does it Brighton.

However, this and the childish tendency of some to rant as a spontaneous
reflex to any mention of the Bush, Blair, or the British Empire does not
excuse what has been going on in Iraq. It is well known that being in a
position of power over a captive can corrupt the guard and any prison needs
checks, balances and systematic controls to reduce this influence as much as
possible. It is clear that these were not in place and this together with
other forces (I suspect exposure to internet BDSM pornography) has led to
the rather distasteful photographs we have seen. None of this can be
dismissed in the Rush Limbaugh manner as being no worse than a fraternity
   ragging.

My concern is that it will be the grunts that get punished while the middle
and senior ranks - who should have put the systematic controls in place -
   won't suffer too much.
