Depending of course on your definition of leftist, I would say that the
green parties today are the most important noncommunist movement of the
   left.

One of the present green members of the European Parliament was also an
important figure in the rise of the new left in the 1960s; I am
referring to Danny Cohn Bendit, prominent in the student movement in
Paris in 1968 and author of a singeing attack on the communist movement
which was published in many countries and widely read by radical youth
in sixtier sand seventies. The english title is "obsolete communism",
and it is still in print.
