|    The Art of Donald McGill    |

From: SLAP-A-LIB-AWAKE@I-LOVE-ARTHUR-ASKEY.COM              In London yesterday for my birthday convivials (that all went swimmingly,       with a piggy-back ride down the Mall at 3am to finish up) we discovered an       exhibition of the Art of Donald McGill at the Cartoon Art Trust, which       resides in a vile National Theatre type piazza of monumental grey ugliness       (they ought to crucify the architect for a couple of hours in the middle of       it) in Bernard Street near Russell Square tube. It is a rather lovely show       and very funny. I learned a lot about the history of the postcard and about       long-ago organisations such as the Blackpool Postcard Censorship Board (you       fink I'm winding you up?) and facts like McGill's postcards were selling at       the rate of two million-odd a week in high season during the later inter-war       years up until the fifties. It also contains notes from various legal       brouhahas about his work and McGill's repsonses which are deadpan hilarious.              ROBBIE              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
