I've never had any doubt about assimilation and how other cultures have and
may continue to benefit the one I come from. One of the most beautiful and
important discoveries (I guess you could all it cultural, though it extends
beyond that) is yoga, which is Indian and probably regarded as hippy dippy
in some reactionary quarters (I know the bible bashers are against it. My
theory as to why is probably because it tackles the things they purport to
tackle and makes you fit into the bargain).
No, my argument is with the set of state diktats and campus manifestos that
have prevailed in English institutions and civil life. Dr Dalrymple has said
what I think, basically, and when I've said in the past what he's said in
that article I've been jeered at, sneered at and generally howled down. Our
own resident nazi hunter Martha came after me and still thinks that I'm some
kind of roaring neocon because of it. The reason for the violent reaction is
of course that old chestnut Political Correctness (you still get people
blithely saying it doesn't exist but funnily enough they are almost always
very politically correct with years of campus life behind them) which hasn't
freed people but locked them into mutual suspicion and an inadaquate idea of
personal liberty and freedom of speech. Old Flaubert had it dead right for
Berkeley and similar: 'inside every revolutionary is a policeman.'
