From: teliok@hotmail.com              I find it really interesting that alot of people in this newsgroup have       accused Kerry and the NYtimes of being "newspeakers"...              And simultaneously, pointing people to websites that discuss how he's a       terrible speaker because he says TOO much.. too many words, and too many       complicated and antiquated ones..              I'm not sure if anyone here actually read any of orwell's writing, but there       seems to be a parallel with Goldstein from 1984, in that everyone i am       reading here is talking about hating kerry, for a specific reason, and that       that reason is specifically the opposite of the truth. I'm not going to go       on a diatribe on bush and his policies, etc... but I think that the entire       news system of the USA was reduced to "weapons of mass distruction" for       about 9 months..                     we hear the word "soldier" only in referrence to american or british forces,       otherwise, everyone is a "combattant" "terrorist" or "insurgent"...              All of the above are soldiers... why not use words with some parity?              Is THAT not new speak?              Anyhow.. i think it's funny that Kerry, who ran on an image of intellect,       would be hated for being a "newspeaker" when he is .. i mean SO obviously,       the opposite. It is precisely like hating Goldstein, who suggested       outrageous things like "freedom of expression, freedom of assembly, freedom       of the press"...              By denouncing and hating people, you can be so easily manipulated into       thinking the least true things... anyhow.. as a student of human nature,       this is pretty appalling.. no one can genuinely believe that kerry is in any       way a linguistic reductionist, or that kerry's camp ever tried to reduce all       public discource to a series of neat slogans and catchphrases...              not at ALL like the whitehouse of the last 4 years.. who basically picks a 3       word phrase, and repeats it day in day out for months on end, until the next       3 word phrase is required to explain the latest decision or policy..                                   sigh..                     if you are under the misapprehension that kerry is a newspeaker, i'd ask you       to read 1984.              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
