   To be fair to the Allport, I don't think he's a mother goose marxist, but   
   yeah, anyone can have both sides of the argument in their head, and read a   
   lot of old crap in The Independent, and believe in abstract ideas over   
   actual experience and look down their nose at everything else but in the   
   end, you have to say where you stand. I think he was having it both ways:   
   ticking both Martha and me off and probably feeling regally smart about it.   
   Like most people who've been brainwashed that they are victims or disabled   
   (he's from the North), all the mealy-mouthed academic, polite society   
   evasions and obfuscs and 'look here, statistics show that letting poor black   
   people stupify themselves on drugs with the minimum of police interference   
   actually makes them think we're cool' gets in his head.   
      
   Note that race politics and the like is a no go area for him--infra fucking   
   dig mate: and who might be snooping from the Uni?--so we just get a weary,   
   virtuous, disinegunous: oh, why can't we all just get on?'
