Oh God yes, the north south thing festers and it's mostly for southerners
'stereotyping' them - which of course 'we' did; but 'they' stereotyped 'us'
as spivs, crooks and toffs. The sense of entitlement seems to be greater
among the northerners because of coal mining or something. Allport on here
years ago once got his class war knickers in a twist because I said I
thought Cilla Black (a British 'entertainter' now slipping into
well-deserved obscurity) a low level talent launched on the world as a joke
by the Beatles. He started off on a homily of hard work (clearly he sees
himself as being another hard working Liverpudlian success story) and how
Cilla had to do it (funnily enough Mr GradPort was -heavens- WRONG: further
investigation shows that Cilla's story *is* one of overnight success-
touched with the fab four's wand). AAAAAAnyway, not long before that Mr
Allport had been prigging off about Bernard Manning, a northern club
comedian of Dickensian vulgarity who I occasionally find funny; Mr Manning
had come up from abject poverty BUT of course had transgressed Social
Democratic Diktats and therefore his fifty years hard graft in the clubs
counted for nothing in his defence. This decaff Marxists make me puke.
Needless to say that Comrade Allport also imputed that I was lazy.

Allport? He'll never come back here: he can't control the debate - that's
why he left in the first place and started the tedious, colourless Horizon-
which he banned me from a few weeks ago. The character Quiggin in Powell's
'Dance to the Music of Time' seems a good fictional analogue of the Scallie
   Sage.
