That's kind of what I mean when I say he's a complete charlatan, because he
*did* connive at a sort of gnostic sagacity: the songs prove that. I believe
he got so far into that act that he became disgusted by it and faked the
bike crash. Apart from John Wes, he was never like that again. I too see him
as a bit of an everyman figure, as opposed to this omniescent artist that a
million loons and Greil Marcus have concocted. He's a little Left, he's a
little Right, he likes a drink, he gets pissed off, he has been known to
laugh, even (according to chronicles) does a bit of DIY. Words come to him,
he writes them down. He's had long periods where he was just faking it,
keeping it up for others. Has he said anything about Iraq?

There was an interesting quote from Dave Van Ronk today,
   > along the lines of maybe Dylan knew more about politics than any of

I agree. The Left's biggest problem is that they (from Berkeley through to
the idiots who run Inner London) cannot recognise a fascist if he has brown
skin. It's like Nelson putting the telescope up to the blind eye. In this
case it's the blind eye and the telescope is the wrong way round... They
don't like Hitch telling them that.
