   'Heavens"? Well, maybe not such an inappropriate ejaculation for what   
   follows, which appears more than a bit disingenuous, MAB.

   DAOIPAL is marvellous but it naturally invites comparison to others in   
   the genre, such as Jack London's _People of the Abyss_. The idea is the   
   same: you buy cheap clothes but sew (or, more likely, _have someone   
   sew_) a gold sovereign into the lining of your coat in case things get   
   too hot to handle.   
      
   Maybe we should look again at the context of that time that GO was   
   shocked/amazed/pleased when a stranger called him 'mate'.
