   And, of course, so it is.  And religious loyalty, which tells us to   
   tolerate national differences, is an offense against country.   
      
   Neither the one or the other, as such, strengthens liberty; each, by   
   itself, threatens liberty.  But the political need for them to   
   coexist, which lowers the morale of both, is, I think, what has made   
   liberty possible in the countries where, for one reason or another, it   
   has arisen.
