   I think because the real movers and shakers are either people are a) too   
   ignorant or b) too privileged (and too screwed up by that privilege) to see   
   any further than their own mission. I see unfairness all round me and to   
   most most orthodox leftists whenever they hear me saying anything that isn't   
   party line they conveniently damn me as 'alas, he's turned into a righty'   
   and then they summon all the Right Wing Ghost Trains that they ever dreamed   
   up to make them feel they are right. But to right the unfairnesses is   
   something that requires a knowledge of humanity and a knowledge of how we -   
   in the West - got as far as we did with liberty and democracy etc and why   
   most of the rest of the world either hasn't or has been lifted up on our   
   coat tails. This is where a lot of lefties switch off and start falling back   
   on the propaganda they picked up in uni. The general gist is: these   
   societies did *this* wrong - insert here, say, any bit of undoubted   
   insolence and cruelty perpetrated by 'us' in the last 300 years - and so it   
   must ALL be wrong and therefore junk the lot of it. My answer to that has   
   always been - and I was glad to see R. Scruton, who's far cleverer than I,   
   using it - so we were so bad eh, AS OPPOSED TO WHICH COUNTRIES IN THAT   
   PERIOD THAT EVER ACHIEVED ANYTHING?   
    Then you get the third world exploitation argument, with which I have   
   sympathy with except that pretty much everyone in Indonesia or the   
   Phillipinnes wants to be where we are: post industrial societies with plenty   
   of folding. Plus, find me the Latte Marxist who actually wants to live the   
   rest of their life in a third world 'unspoilt' country...   
    In the UK the left - academia, television and pop culture generally - have   
   mounted an endless attack on the British Empire and that is FAIR ENOUGH but   
   when you say ok, it was a racket but let's also be adult enough to look at   
   th nuances and the French and Belgian empires it all goes quiet. I could   
   mention the Arab slave trade: from several thousand years BC to the present   
   day. ALAS, lefties don't want to know.   
    We got trashed because we were so bloody good at it. Plus Africa is only a   
   mess because of the few years Europeans were there: it's so frightfully   
   trite and stupid but that's PC's grip because you might have to stand up to   
   a black supremacist professor or something and you'd rather join the   
   republican party than do *that*...   
      
    Of course, a lefty reading this will now be thinking: and what about all   
   the greedy fuckers? Indeed I am no fan of any of that. But if you think that   
   dismantling bourgeois society will emliminate greedy, barbarous fuckers then   
   come to London and see for yourself what a Left Wing approach gets you (this   
   is where the BBC with its careful management of unpalatable-to-lefties news   
   management kicks in). A well known lefty of this newsgroup would say: the   
   idiots will always be with us. Period. But the next thought from that, which   
   should be: yes but why is idiocy becoming more and not less prevalent as   
   incomes and standards of living rise from the catch-all excuse of 'poverty'?   
   is not answered. And the reason it isn't asnwered is because some hard   
   thinking about how a society works would surely have to follow and that is   
   hell on earth to someone who is, at root, a Marxist. If you think long and   
   hard about Marxism and all its satellites - socialism, political   
   correctness, postmodernism etc they all start to fall in on themselves,   
   which is why, under pressure, lefties suddenly get all hayseed: Q: what are   
   the reasons for all the pathologies in the black 'community' A: Shucks,   
   guess racism drives ya crazy! Q: Don't you think a child should, ideally ,   
   have a father and mother? A: YOU'RE JUST DISCRIMINATING AND DEMONIZING   
   SINGLE PARENTS AND GAYS!!   
      
   Etc. It's so juvenile the Islamic scholars of the future in Britain and   
   America will chortle at how such a civilisation-defeating mindset ever   
   managed to usurp eveything else and then bring final destruction on itself.   
      
    The counter-intuitive reasoning employed by orthodox lefties says - and I   
   saw this used by said well known lefty from this newsgroup - that if you   
   criticise the left, if you percieve in Orwell things that are an anathema to   
   doctrinaire lefties then you are, and I quote, 'opposed to human equality'.   
    When you are up against that kind of reductionism, there's no argument   
   really but merely the observation that even west coast Latte Marxism shows   
   how , in that comment, the obdurate, narrow view that its 20th century Big   
   Brother version managed to kill so many millions whilst being cheered by the   
   intellectuals.   
    Of course, as has been well said by many more august pundits than me, it's   
   all a replacement for religion and the tactics, strategies, the heresies,   
   myths and the demonizing are in line with organised religion. Unfortunately   
   for western civilisation, it's a religion that ultimately believes in   
   nothing but a joyless steamrolling of the culture that gave it the financial   
   and social capital to be nihilistic and foolish enough to do the   
   steamrolling. The only consolation is that the project is nearing its end -   
   Europe first, then England, then...
