From: word_chemist@hotmail.com              'Blair on Parkinson was surreal. The thing that annoys me most about him is       the way he pretends to be down to earth and what some people call 'blokey'.       I turned over and watched part of a film about Indian immigrants in the       midlands in the 70s (Anita and Me). It was quite enjoyable and funny in       parts. Its faults were odd turns into melodrama, and the usual BBC - it was       funded by them - take on immigrant cultures (they are more rich and aren't       the white working class in need of some rigorous re-education).       The most interesting part about it for me was how a conservative outlook was       portrayed as being quite acceptable and understandable among the immigrants       but something inward looking and bad among the indigenous whites. Plus of       course the Indians were philanthropic to the whites but received       nationalistic violence in return.       The final scene seemed to be an allegory of the Cultural Revolution: an       Anglican vicar gives a right-on, hip-talking marriage service (the choir       sing a churchy version of Chicory Tip's Son of my Father) before stripping       off his vestments and driving off in a hippyfied Thames van (to be replaced       by a smiling black vicar who is looked on with horror by a white woman). The       message seems to be immigrant tradition good, indigenous tradition bad. The       Broadcasting Left needs to get its shit together over this because the gaps       in the reasoning and dogma are a trifle embarrassing for people so rich and       highly educated.'                     --       http://london.journalspace.com/              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
