   "Hold your nose and vote the straight Democratic ticket" was a saying   
   in my parents' generation when I was little.  A friend of mine found,   
   on the Web, that it goes back to the presidential election of 1896.   
   So it was 50 years old then, and at 110 it is still going strong.
