From: joe_f@verizon.net              P.S. I detected another blunder by Davison in the Complete Works.       Unfortunately, I did not make a note of it; when I discovered, to my       indignation, that no Web site had been set up for corrections, I let       it pass. In one of the diaries, O. mentions taking a walk in Kensal       Rise Cemetery. Davison "corrects" that to Kensal Green, a much       better-known cemetery and one commonly used to allude to death       (O. himself, IIRC, uses it that way in one of the novels; and, as       Davison noted, Chesterton does so in a famous poem). Google reveals,       however, that (1) Kensal Green & Kensal Rise are alternative names for       the same London neighborhood, and (2) they are names for distinct       cemeteries in that neighborhood. (To be cautious: I cannot find an       explicit contrast between them; it may be that they are likewise       alternative names for the same cemetery.) I took the trouble to look       that up because it seemed implausible that O. would mistake the name       of a place in his own neighborhood, and one that he frequented to       boot. It seems to me Davison ought to have been suspicious too.       --       --- Joe Fineman joe_f@verizon.net              ||: Public opinion might be worthy of attention if you were the :||       ||: only one paying attention to it. :||              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
