As a committed socialist you will know that the never-seen utopian state can
only be reached by some form of coercion, and that coercion begins in the
minds of the intellectuals - people for whom ideas are more impotant than
people - and ends in the hands of their enforcers. You may think it
predictable, middlebrow and provincial to compare today's leftists with the
totalitarians of the past but I think comparison is good and let's face it,
you'd be happy to compare Donald Rumsfield and George W Bush to the Sheriff
of Nottingham and Guy of Gisborne.

Where Lennon is concerned it is pretty hard for the sane man to take that
particular bit of poetasting from a such a demagogic, greedy, violent,
hypocritical person as Lennon. Why didn't he do it? Why didn;t he give all
his money away and go and live in the projects? Why don't you? Why doesn't
Bono? Now you can say trust the tale not the teller as old DH prescribed but
it really doesn't work because you'd be the first to bawl out a hypocrite
from, say, the church. So the ratchet has to work both ways. Lennon is like
certain members of our democratic socialist government: the best for them
while they preach utilitarian enforced-mediocrity for everyone else.
Examples, relishable examples, can be provided. You will say shucks, a few
bad apples doesn't tarnish the cause; but the this is a long-standing easily
recognisable trend among millenarians. And it's so much harder take their
   hypocrisy.
