   I never heard of that essay but I like it!  I find it interesting that   
   he uses the word "cult" to describe games and I also have compared   
   sports and other mass activities to religious cults.  Ever since I was   
   a kid I hated sports and found my father's fanaticism watching teevee   
   football to be scary and disturbing and the time he dragged me to some   
   oh-so-fucking-important bowl game was the worst time of my life.   
      
   In spite of all that, I actually like watching the Olympics.  Many of   
   the Olympic competitions are between individuals and not teams, and it   
   is team sports I dislike.  Being a fan of an individual diver or   
   skater is not the same as blind worship of a collective team.
