This is adolescent. It is not grown-up. You are obsessed with Forster's
homosexuality, so you think that Smith is being evasive when she skirts
it -- except through a statement that dimisses the b-word by supercharging
its meaning: "Like all English novelists, [Forster] wasa tricky bugger."
You also seem to think that Zadie Smith's hybrid skin somehow conditions her
approach to Forster when it is clear to everyone but you that she writes
here as an Englishwoman not as a Negro. General Conyers, excuse me if I
speak out of turn, but if you want to have reserves about homos that is your
right as a red-blooded male, but it is vital that you make the leap about
Negroes. A Negro is someone who was born black. His or her blackness was
true from the time he was one minute old. A homo is someone who came out of
puberty with a liking for his own sex. The first thing has nothing to do
with choice or character and is therefore not impeachable. It is really
ironic that you totally miss how Zadie Smith refuses to let her cool eye be
cooped up generationally. or do you think that her ahistorical perspective
in the Forster article is is a pose, a little throwing of dust in our eyes
to distract us from her legerdemain of fearlessly crossing the big divide
and crashing lily-white Eliotish and Connollyish purlieus? O if you only
had the presumption she has! You once said that I have a problem with the
ideas of excellence and genius and ranking in the arts. This is absurd
since I am an arrant elitist and you've been reading too much Roger Kimball
and Dinesh D'Souza and quite frankly, on the basis of your story about
Evgenius Yummy, I think it is YOU who has problems with elitism! By finding
bien-pensants under the bed everywhere, your sly mind has found a way to
make your working-class loyalties compatible with an intelligent theory of
society and our times. Now you listen up good faggot and maybe if I sense
that I have your ear I'll toss you some pearls of wisdom if I happen to be
that way disposed (said in a Brooklyn accent). I am tired of your lip, tired
of your tedious paranoia. I think in the past I only hurt you by 'digging'
   you so much.
