Somewhere (I can't find it in CEJL; I suppose I read it in the
Collected Works), Orwell recalls having read that after the
suppression of the Paris Commune, the police were under orders to
shoot the ringleaders, and they decided that any arrestee who showed a
sign of being educated was probably a ringleader. One was shot for
wearing a wristwatch; another, for having an "intelligent face".
Orwell commented, "I should not like to be shot for having an
   intelligent face".
