Macy’s is laying off more than 2,300 employees and closing five stores,
the department store chain announced Thursday.

The retailer has roughly 94,500 employees and 507 stores, with the cuts
representing around 3.5% of its workforce and about 1% of its brick-and-
   mortar locations.

The job cuts will come from both its corporate office and stores.

“As we prepare to deploy a new strategy to meet the needs of an ever-
changing consumer and marketplace, we made the difficult decision to
reduce our workforce by 3.5% to become a more streamlined company,” Macy’s
   said in a statement.

The affected stores, which will close early in 2024, are mall locations in
   Arlington, Va.; San Leandro, Calif.; Lihue, Hawaii; Simi Valley, Calif.;
and Tallahassee, Fla. The chain plans to open some smaller stores in
outdoor shopping centers like strip malls. The company also has 158
Bluemercury stores and 56 Bloomingdale’s stores.

Macy’s slashed 2,000 corporate jobs and closed its Cincinnati headquarters
and tech offices in San Francisco in early 2020.

The cuts comes ahead of Bloomingdale’s CEO Tony Spring’s promotion to the
Macy’s CEO job. Current chief executive Jeff Gennette is retiring next
   month.

In December, an investment group with designs on Macy’s real estate
portfolio made a $5.8 billion bid to buy the company.
