What US Robotics modem are you using -- a 28.8K or a 56K model
   (or a slower one)?

I've had trouble with US Robotics modems and so I don't use them.

Hmmm, I know nothing about the Jameco RS-232.

The C128 user port is limited to 9600 for modems. I use Desterm
2.01, too, but I've never seen a setting for it to connect 9600 through
the user port (2400... yes). Higher speeds are possible (up to 56K) with
Desterm 2.01 when used with a Swiftlink or Turbo-232 cart connected in
the expansion port. Of course, 56K is a myth with phone lines; you'd be
lucky to get somewhere between 40-50K.
