With WinVICE, press Alt+m to enter the monitor when the game is
running. "d 1535" will display the code at $1535 (5429 decimal):

   (C:$048b) d 1535
   .C:1535 CE B3 03 DEC $03B3
   .C:1538 10 11 BPL $154B
   .C:153a 20 78 FD JSR $FD78
   .C:153d A0 23 LDY #$23
   .C:153f 20 00 3E JSR $3E00
   .C:1542 20 AF 37 JSR $37AF
   .C:1545 20 06 16 JSR $1606
   .C:1548 4C 2E 01 JMP $012E
   .C:154b 20 06 16 JSR $1606
   .C:154e A0 41 LDY #$41

Your poke changes the DECrement instruction into a dummy LoaDY. The
number of lives left is stored at $03b3. So:

     For infinite lives, do:

       > 1535 ac

     For 9 lives, do:

       > 03b3 09

You exit the monitor and return to the game with "x".
