   My gut reaction to the story was -- "Who doesn't she trust - her kid or her   
   parenting?"  But the going public with it was completely uncalled for.   
   Humiliating your kid is not good parenting, it only fuels mistrust and   
   resentment.  Even if he eventually comes to understand and grudgingly   
   approve of her spying -- and her admitted sneaking around makes it spying as   
   opposed to 'keeping tabs' -- he's not going to understand why she thought it   
   necessary to humiliate him.   
      
   There is no reason why should sneak around.  She pays the bills for the   
   internet account and the cell phone -- she can demand to see them at   
   anytime.  If he refuses, she can cancel them.  Spying is unnecessary and   
   will likely do more harm than good.
