   Maybe it's something analogous to smoking.   
      
   There was all that stuff about "Secondhand Smoke" and other deleterious   
   health effects used to ban smoking in the workplace.   
      
   Rightly or wrongly, my take was that nobody really gave a damn about   
   health issues - but they'd bend over backwards to get rid of the   
   stink.... and they did by embracing the health issues.   
      
   Analogously, granting for a moment that there has not been a big   
   increase in traffic accidents corrected for other mitigating factors,   
   maybe the real issues with non-cellphone-users are the guys cruising the   
   hammer lane, people making turns without signalling, people drifting   
   back-and-forth over the lane markers at 70+, and so-forth.....all the   
   time obviously yakking on the phone instead of paying full attention to   
   driving.....   
      
   And the non-users just want to get rid of that behavior and embracing an   
   idea that seems obvious (whether-or-not it's actually based on fact) is   
   attractive.   
      
   Just a thought....
