   Excellent point. On the phone, someone is always talking (unless you're   
   on hold). The distraction is constant--and it doesn't immediately stop   
   if there's an issue on the road.   
      
   I've even experienced that at home. I was on the phone to a friend back   
   East one day when we had the latest in a morning-long series of earth-   
   quakes. She was talking and didn't hear me say, "Hang on...wait." That   
   inherent lack of awareness of local events by the person on the other end   
   of the phone can have much worse consequences when you're driving a car.
