   Octane ratings are a perfect example of how dumb the average   
   person really is.   
      
   Most people don't have a clue what the octane rating indicates.   
      
   Many times (hundreds), I have pulled up to a pump and, since   
   there's not much else to do while filling up, I casually ask   
   (as if I don't know the answer) the person filling up next to   
   me what the octane ratings mean.   
      
   Heh heh ... I have *never* once gotten the correct answer out   
   of anyone, although some do say they use what the owners manual   
   says to use (which is the right approach, even if they don't   
   understand the procedure).   
      
   One guy, as I recall, got close, but then when I asked what   
   the R+M/2 meant, he fell flat.   
      
   So, fewer than 1% of the people I met while filling up their gas   
   had *any* inkling of what the octane ratings indicate.
