   what newsreader won't show a smiley?   
      
   it's nothing more than 2 or 3 standard ascii characters. any newsreader   
   that can't manage that is *really* broken and not just with smileys.   
      
   as for quotes, it's just a prefix character, usually > but sometimes |.   
      
   the better newsreaders colour the various quote levels but the text is   
   always visible and readable, even in the most primitive newsreaders.
