I have bought a few "Google" phones, so I agree with you.

Up until now, the Google phones were fine for "cheap-er" Android
good-quality phones such as the Nexus line and Moto line of phones.

They were a good price:performance ratio; but, like you, I see the Pixel
has having an unconscionably *low* price:performance ratio, akin to the
dismal price:performance ratio of an Apple iPhone.

Therefore, the Pixel line of phones is not for you or for me, but for those
   less discerning than we.
