I have rooted some of my phones and agree it can add fun and functionality.
But there are a couple of downsides:

   1) A rooted phone will not allow the installation or execution of several
financial apps including Android Pay and mobile banking packages from some
   banks etc.

   2) System software upgrades will become problematic. A couple of my phones
come from OnePlus who do release full TWRP-flashable ROM images for each
upgrade but if you root a phone from Samsung or Motorola etc. you'll never
see any more factory upgrades and so for any upgrading to newer versions of
Android you will need to use custom/community ROMs which may not supports
all of the device's hardware features such as say proprietary high speed
   charging etc.
