   for at&t, you don't even need to be a customer. fill out the form on   
   their web site and it will take as little as a few minutes to complete   
   (assuming it's not blacklisted). for iphones, they update it server   
   side and you just need to reset the phone. other phones usually require   
   a code to be emailed, which can take a day or two.   
      
   verizon is legally prohibited from locking lte phones in exchange for   
   using the 700mhz spectrum (see below), however, they recently decided   
   laws no longer applies to them and announced plans that they will be   
   locking phones, then paid off ¼ to look the other way.   
      
   sprint can be a pain, but they'll usually unlock phones.
