   Ok, I've got an iFixit bit set (that can handle all the proprietary   
   screws), and it was definitely more than 50 cents. I'm curious what   
   you're referring to.   
      
   Yes, you can get a decent quality battery+DIY replacement kit for half   
   or less what Apple would charge. But for newer phones (at least newer   
   than X, maybe some older ones too?), they're authenticating the   
   battery in such a way that only they or an authorized repair facility   
   can set the authentication for the replacement, even if it's an Apple   
   battery. It'll work and not throttle, but settings won't show the   
   health data, just warn that you have an unverified battery.

   Again, I don't care; there's too many shady repair operations (like the   
   analogy I made before, Joe's Garage can't fix a Rolls, either; and you   
   probably wouldn't want them to try).
