Guns were useful in colonial days to subdue the native population, but
the colonial days are passe. The US is the last country in the world
still living its colonial dream, even after its epic failures in
   colonizing Vietnam and Afghanistan.

The US defeated the Germans by firebombing Dresden, and defeated the
Japanese by atomic-bombing Hiroshima and Nagasaki, not with guns. Today,
guns in the hands of the general population serve no purpose in
defending the US against foreign invasion. You won't see foreign troops
storming beaches or parachuting into cities. WWIII will be fought with
missiles, so guns are useless in national defence, but weapon of choice
in suicide, road rages, drug deals gone bad, robbery and murder,
   especially mass shootings.
