   In the 1870s Ottmar Megenthaler's invention of the Linotype caused eruptions   
   of democracy in some very unlikely places, but by the 1930s they were gone.   
   THe analogy with the internet has always been on my mind. The internet was a   
   lot freeer in the 1990s. THen all the moderators and curators took over.
