   Yes.  The tube is tripped only when the trip coil's supposed to be   
   activated.  IIRC, the 2050 requires a bit of a negative bias (-25V seems   
   to stick in my mind) to stay untripped, and that grounding this bias out   
   will cause it to fire.   
      
   If you've not rebuilt the selection receiver, do so, first.  The   
   paper/wax capacitors in these things stunk when they were new, and get   
   worse with age.  Also, the electrolytics are likely shot.  A noisy pulse   
   amp (I think the AY has a sepperate sense amp) will cause intermittent   
   tripping, too.   
      
   I bet when you power the thing up (if you don't need the amp and it's   
   unrebuilt, pull the fuse from it) the 2050 fires as soon as it's warmed   
   up.  I suspect what's happening is you're not getting the negative bias   
   on the tube due to a power supply fault.
