   A good starter would be "Collect British Postmarks" by Whitney.   
      
   The first 64 pages would deal with the pre-stamp (label) markings. Some   
   markings may show up on stamped letters as well - then it's a bonus!   
      
   My copy is the 5th edition from 1990 - I believe that there are later   
   editions ... I just use it for ratio pricing.   
      
   Alcock & Holland have a much greater run of iinformation, but they dodn't   
   price.
