XPost: rec.collecting.stamps.discuss       From: Lloyd@virtualstampclub.com              Christopher Corbett, author of Orphans Preferred: The Twisted Truth and       Lasting Legend of the Pony Express, will speak about the Pony Express       during NAPEX 2010, the top Washington, DC-area stamp collecting show of       the year.              The show is being held June 4-6 at Hilton McLean Tysons Corner in       McLean, Va. Corbett, who teaches journalism at the University of       Maryland-Baltimore County, will speak at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 5. and       parking are free.              This year is the 150th anniversary of the Pony Express, a private       company which carried mail and small packages between St. Joseph, Mo.,       to Sacramento, Calif. NAPEX 2010 is offering a special pictorial       cancellation for each day of the show to commemorate the express mail       service, and commemorative covers ― decorated envelopes with related       stamps and the pictorial cancellations.              The Pony Express lasted only 18 months, spurned for a mail contract by       the Post Office Department and replaced in speed by the transcontinental       telegraph.              Yet the short-lived express service lives on in popular lore.              Corbett's Orphans Preferred was just re-released for the 150th       anniversary of the Pony Express. Corbett is a former news editor with       The Associated Press, and has also written the novel Vacationland. 1994,       he has written The Back Page, an award-winning column for Style magazine       in Baltimore. He will be available to autograph copies of Orphans       Preferred copies will be for sale after his talk.              NAPEX 2010 is a World Series of Philately show, one of about 30       "national" shows, and features not only a competitive exhibition of       multi-frame stamp and cover exhibits, but also single-frame and       literature competitions. In addition, NAPEX 2010 will host the annual       meetings of three national stamp societies ― American Air Mail Society,       the Colombia/Panama Philatelic Study Group, and Society of Australasian       Specialists/Oceania.              The three-day NAPEX 2010 will also include more than 70 dealers, the       U.S. and United Nations postal administrations and Nordica, which       represents several Scandinavian countries. There is a special hotel rate       at the Hilton of $130 a night for NAPEX visitors.              For more information on NAPEX, www.napex.org or contact show chairman       Darrell Ertzberger at mteton@aol.com.              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
