You need to assume that any arbitrary newsgroup
prohibits ads unless they are explicitly allowed.
Auction ads are generally allowed in:
      alt.marketplace.* groups

So you can list auctions in:
      alt.marketplace.online.ebay
but no one will read them, and you need to consider
whether any netnews ads actually work.

The first time a customer brings an elephant into
the china shop, the shopkeeper politely explains
that elephants are not welcome. After about the
10th elephant, the shopkeeper start shooting them.
After 100, he starts shooting their owners, too.

We've had at least 3 spams so far today, and the
   day is young.

   > But I guess some people just need public attention.

No, the point of the point posted responses is so
that other would-be spammers see that, unlike in
   alt.marketplace.online.ebay, ads get replies here.
They just might look at the replies (before they
post), and catch a clue. And in this case, posting
the response was all I did. I can't speak for others.

Steps are taken to prevent this ng from turning into
a cesspool like alt.marketing.online.other, full of
junk nobody reads. If you're lucky, no one has filed
complaints with the auction site, your ISP and your
NNTP posting host. Such complaints are often effective.

In general, netnews will serve you if you participate
as a contributor in topics related to your product.
A discrete URL in your .SIG will guide interested
buyers to your site, and then your auctions.

... and no, I'm not auctioning anything at the moment.
