   I don't know well that product but many of these cleanup tools   
   incorporate a software update checker.  They alert you to common   
   programs that have a newer version available.  Secunia PSI is one   
   example.  The Avast Free that I have (latest) has a software checker   
   (free version only checks but payware version will do the updates).  So   
   it's probably some software update check feature of the software.
