The current versions of Mint are XFCE, KDE, Cinnamon, or MATE DEs
whereas the current Mint Debian are Cinnamon or MATE. I'm not sure
which combination you tried of regular Mint doesn't work but Mint Debian
does, unless you tried to do regular Mint Cinnamon and then Mint Debian
   MATE did.

The current Zorin is based on Ub 13.10 and a tweaked Gnome 3.8.4 DE
neither of which would be my choice for old hardware.

If I were choosing a distro for old hardware, I wouldn't base it on that
Ub or a recent v. of gnome, neither of which is lean or mean, and also
the Ub infrastructure is going to lose its support (9 mo) too soon to
   suit me, 2014 Jul.

I would either choose an XFCE Ub with LTS or an XFCE Debian rolling or
an LXDE Ub LTS such as LXLE or LXDE Debian rolling.

Also, rather than a 'straight' Debian, many average users would be
better off using a tweaked Debian such as SolydX.
