You can use that, but there are partition tools you can use as well.

I'm using W7 myself atm, but I've installed W8 for a couple of other
people and I didn't like it. But it improves if you install Start8 to
make it look and feel like W7. I believe it costs around 5 dollar.

My brother, god child and niece all had XP on their computer and I've
replaced it with Xubuntu (12.04 and 14.04). They all used Thunderbird,
Firefox and LibreOffice on Windows, so they were familiar with at least
some of the programs. I haven't heard any complaints yet!

Xubuntu 12.04 should run fine on your 7yo computer. You can download an
   ISO,

burn it on a CD/DVD and then boot with it (a so-called "live CD"). It
won't install anything, but it will show you how it looks and you can
check if your hardware is recognized. Only downside about 12.04 is that
it will receive updates until April 2015. 14.04 is LTS and will be
   supported until April 2019.

   Anyway, just a thought...
