Thanks very much for your help.

I don't have Autoruns (yet) but I did try using msconfig to set it to
   booting without Startups.

It seemed to make an improvement, and things ran faster, and so far I
haven't discovered anything that has stopped working as a result.

Looking at the Task Manager, a normal boot shows that 1.25 GB memory
   is being used.

Booting without the startups it shows that 419 MB of memory is being
used, and after running MS Word 2003 it is 422 MB.

I might try to get hold of Autoruns later, but I can live with that
   for now.
