|    Swapping Hard Drives    |

From: jsowden@americansentry.net              I have several hard drives that I have removed from boxes that were       running various versions of windows, mainly xp due to their age. One       night, in the middle of the night I had a power supply die, and the fast       solution was to swap the HD with another box and get it up and running.        Unfortunately, it refused to boot, with a message to call some guy in       India. I had to explain why I was swapping the HD to another computer       that had windows on its HD. After making my best effort to explain that       I am not trying to cheat microsoft, after all they have already been       paid for the license, they gave me a long number to key in to allow my       computer to run my license of windows. (This is a perfect example of why       I have moved to Ubuntu, except for a few boxes, due to manufacturers who       only write their code for windows.              My issue: I have a few hard drives that I did not ID which box they came       out of. When/If I install a hard drive in the "wrong" box, will windows       mark the O/S to not allow me to boot it up on any box, even the       "correct" one?              John              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
