   I doubt it.  It's almost certainly much more simple than that, the   
   files are hidden by default.   
      
   To OP: Tools, Folder Options, View,   
   	Select Show hidden files and folders   
   	Unselect Hide extensions for known file types   
   	Unselect Hide protected Operating System files.   
      
   Then you'll be able to see *.lnk files.
